Legacy History

Legacy History

The Legacy stands as both a tribute to the past and a gateway to the future of the National Western. Built as a four-story, 115,000-square-foot structure integrated with the new Livestock Center, it honors the heritage of the Stock Show while embracing modern design. Natural materials, expressive architecture, and community-driven programming make The Legacy a landmark destination in Denver.

Timeline

1906 – The First Stock Show

What began as a modest gathering of ranchers and farmers in 1906 has grown into one of the most celebrated events in the West. The first National Western Stock Show brought together agriculture, livestock, and rodeo culture, setting a foundation for what would become a century-long tradition. Each year since, hundreds of thousands have gathered in Denver to honor the region’s heritage, showcase innovation in ranching and farming, and foster connections across generations of Western families.

1994 – The Birth of the Permanent Collection

The launch of the Coors Western Art Exhibit & Sale not only introduced contemporary works of Western art to new audiences but also sparked the creation of the National Western Permanent Collection. Each year, a new piece was acquired, building a growing archive of Western artistry. Today, this collection represents both cultural preservation and a philanthropic tradition, as proceeds from the exhibit support scholarships for students pursuing careers in agriculture, veterinary medicine, and related sciences.

2025 – Opening The Legacy

The completion of The Legacy, a 115,000-square-foot architectural landmark, marks a new chapter for the National Western. As the permanent home for the Western Stock Show Association, the building embodies both continuity and progress through a contemporary expression of western architecture—honoring the region’s heritage while looking toward the future. Its warm, natural material palette of weathered steel, Colorado Buff Sandstone, glass, and wood evokes a sense of western hospitality, while distinct outdoor terraces frame sweeping views of the National Western Center grounds, downtown Denver, and the Rocky Mountains. Inside, a grand interconnecting stair anchors the building’s interior, encouraging movement and connection across all floors. Beyond serving as headquarters, The Legacy is designed to host education, arts, hospitality, and community programming year-round. With its steel structure, exposed wood details in the Club space, and spaces like the Wilson Art Gallery and Legacy Saloon, The Legacy transforms the historic Stock Show into a permanent cultural hub—a dynamic, sustainable centerpiece that reflects the movement and energy of the National Western Campus and will anchor its role in Denver for generations to come.

 Cultural Significance / Community Role

For more than 120 years, the National Western has been a gathering place for nearly 700,000 annual visitors—bridging urban life and rural heritage. The Legacy carries that tradition forward, providing a permanent space where Western culture can be celebrated, preserved, and shared. Far from simply a venue, it is a cultural touchstone for Denver and the broader West: a living home for the stories, artistry, and community spirit that define the region.
